Museum of Peasant Uprisings

The 400th anniversary of the Peasant Revolt initiated the foundation of the memorial complex in Gornja Stubica consisting of the newly established Museum of Peasant Uprisings with the Monument to Matija Gubec and the Peasant Revolt, a cultivated park with paths, a newly planted Alley of lime-trees and a renovated area around the famous Gubec’s Lime-tree.

The Museum of Peasant Uprisings was visited by hundred thousands of visitors, and it was conceived as a memorial history museum mainly depicting events connected to the Great Peasant Revolt of 1573 and some other uprisings and rebellions before or after the revolt. At the beginning of 2002, after almost three decades, It changed the old display. A starting point for the new exposition was the necessity to see events in broader context and greater number of original museum objects. The central theme of the revolt has been incorporated into the presentation of the feudal period from the late Middle Ages to the abolishment of serfdom in 1848.

A 20-minute walk will take you to the original Gubec Lime Tree and on the next hill you will find the Museum of Peasant Uprisings with the magnificent Monument to Matija Gubec. Donja Stubica Favours Traditional Gardens and Orchards

Donja Stubica became famous with Zagorje's Traditional Garden project, and the flower of the year competition, which triggered a new project led by Donja Stubica Tourist Board called Croatian Iris Garden. Near Terme Jezerčica vistors can see the first Croatian iris garden. Donja Stubica organises every autumn an Influential and educational exhibition Zagorje, an Orchard of Old Fruits. Alongside its motivational and educational effects, the exhibition was the reason for publishing the first catalogue of traditional fruit varieties in Croatia. Old orchards were being restored and new ones with traditional varieties and products grown. Linden Days Manifestation organised by Donja Stubica Tourist Board has been put up annually since 2006. The manifestation was responsible for the incentive for preserving the genes of Gubec's lime-tree, and founding the Live Archives of Gubec's Lime-tree Progeny Seedlings in Hižakovec, Matija Gubec's place of birth, the first of its kind in Croatia.

Wine tasting

Wine making has been a tradition of Stubica countryside since medieval times. Following the tradition, the wine makers of today put in considerable efforts in the production of quality home-grown wine. Many wine cottages (kleti) were turned into small wine-cellars. Stubica's wine makers established an association called Peharček and they regularly take part in wine fairs.

Calendar of Events

Every year Stubica area offers interesting events:
Knights' Tournament in Museum of Peasant Uprisings in June and Battle at Stubica in February are the most famous living history events in Croatia.

St. George is a patron saint of Gornja Stubica so every April there is a traditional fair near the parish church and Gubec Lime Tree.

Susreti za Rudija is a traditional meeting with air-show spectacle performed by air forces of Croatian Army in memory of the national hero, pilot Rudolf Perešin.

Mushroom Festival in Stubičke Toplice

Gljivarenje v Stubakima is widely known cultural manifestation with a long tradition and is one of the largest mushroom festivals in Croatia. Around 700 mushroom enthusiasts, including both the contestants and visitors, regularly attend the festival. At the festival, people hang out, go to the forests, and participate in making mushroom stew. Also, experts identify found mushrooms, and a mushroom expert gives lectures.
